How the Internet has changed how we buy cars.
The good, the bad, & the ugly

It’s no secret that you can buy pretty much everything online these days. Although the physical car purchase doesn’t happen quite as often as phone cases, it’s crystal clear that the internet has affected the industry. The Good: Access to Information We’re now a simple Google search away from a wealth of information the moment we decide – “Hey, it’s time to look for a new or used car.” And that’s exactly what we’re doing. According to a 2016 survey by Cox Automotive, 88% of car buyers surveyed were using the internet during the purchase process, with the average car buyer spending 59% of their time researching and shopping around online. Why wouldn’t we arm ourselves with all this information? But, how do we use it effectively? For our used car buyers, we do recommend some initial research to decide on a few makes and models or a general idea of what works for you and your life. It gives us a place to start looking for the perfect fit for you. What’s the average price range? What are the common issues with the cars you’re interested in? One tip though: take online reviews with a grain of salt, you’ll […]

You CAN Buy a Pre-Owned Car Without Sitting In It.

Can you picture yourself spending your hard-earned money, investing in a car that you’ve not had the chance to sit in, touch, or drive? Believe it or not, it’s just another day around here. Lets talk about how it can be done : The Where & The Who to Buy From We’re not really talking about private sales here. Don’t put too much trust in Mr. Tommy Trader online or dealer ads that show only “beauty shots” of a clean and shiny car from 10 feet away – in just the right shade of red you’ve been dreaming about. Try your best to take your heart out of the game. Yes, you should know what makes and models that get your engine revving, but always remember it’s what’s on the inside that counts (something you don’t often see online). There are other car-buying resources out there (some publicly accessible, some not), including national leasing companies and auction sites that have professional third-party inspectors who compile detailed reports on every lease return or used car that passes through. Every little ding, whether proper maintenance procedures, parts and tires have been used, etc…is noted. If you know what to look for in […]

Spring is hard on springs – Notice problems early

It is well known that the roads in Saint John (and the rest of New Brunswick) are horrible and this is especially the case in Spring. Frost heaves and pot holes are around every corner, waiting to catch you off guard. The danger of these hazards is that they can really beat up your suspension, ball joints, tires, wheels, and more. Last week while doing a Motor vehicle inspection for a customer we noticed a cracked spring – which could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t caught before another big bump.   What can you do? One of the best things that you can do, is report unsafe road hazards such as pot holes to the city. If they don’t know about it, it can’t get fixed. You can report these on Saint John’s Potholes 101 page. Be alert and vigilant when driving. New pot holes can form fairly quickly, just because there wasn’t one there this morning, doesn’t mean that there won’t be tonight. Slow down, and beware of puddles, as many can be deeper than they look. I hit a bad one, now what? We all have the same cringe every time we accidentally hit something […]

Is your check engine light on?

The dreaded check engine light. Many people get concerned when it comes on, but it’s often not always as bad as you might think. Autoguide.com has posted the “Top 10 Reasons Why Your Check Engine Light is On” article recently, which describes the most common check engine repairs. But what does it mean? First – don’t panic. If the yellow check engine light comes on, it is usually there as a caution to you to go have your vehicle serviced and checked out soon. However, if it is red, we recommended to stop driving immediately and contact us for the best option to proceed. The “Check Engine” light is widely over-loaded. It could be anything from your gas cap not having a good seal, to significant faults with the various components in the engine. The only way to really know is to hook your car up to a vehicle diagnostic computer through the car’s ODBII port. The codes can be read to help identify what the underlaying issue is. If the fault is intermittent, the code will usually be stored, even if the light eventually goes out. In the last year the most common causes of the check engine light that we have noticed […]

What car options should I be looking for?

We often get asked about what car options should I look for,  when I get my next vehicle?  Having been in the luxury car business for the past 30 years my advice is that buyers chose their cars colours and options wisely as it can have a significant impact on the future value of the vehicle.  Options vary widely amongst all of the different manufactures, however in the luxury market there are certain things that you should be looking for. With most European vehicle manufacturers you really need to get their Premium package to get all the options you would expect. This applies to BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche and Range Rover All these models have extensive option sheets so you need to research these thoroughly. Each manufacturer has slightly different content to these packages but most include heated seats, memory seats, adjustable steering column, Bluetooth telephone integration, parking aids and rear hatch or trunk closer’s. Rear hatch or trunk closers are a very useful feature for soccer moms’ and people who drive these vehicles daily lugging children and crazy amounts of cargo. Easy access to the rear cargo compartment is without doubt an overlooked area in most sales persons walk […]

Car History Reports – How to avoid a vehicle that has had an accident

Car history reports, CarFax, Car Proof, Auto Check – what do these mean to the average  car buyer ? When you are buying a replacement car it is important to know the history of the car your are buying. This is particularly important with used or pre Owned cars.  Knowing a car’s history can save a buyer thousands of dollars and prevent some very unpleasant surprises once you own it. This said there are some pitfalls and traps to watch out for reading these reports. Car accidents can and do happen – this is a fact of life. Having been in the automobile business for 30 plus years , not all cars that have had and accident scare me nor should they scare a buyer.   There is a significant difference between a fender bender accident and one that had frame or uni-body damage.  As a professional I have no issues with minor accident or fender bender’s but I definitely steer my clients away from vehicles that have had significant body repairs. The key is to be informed and to inspect the vehicle completely to insure that any vehicle was properly repaired to the manufacturer standards. The best line of defence […]
